What Makes Douglas Fir Special in Aromatherapy?
We got a message today from a essential oil company in New Zealand. It said "I am from Port Blakely New Zealand Essential Oils. We are the world's leading producer of Douglas-fir essential oil.
My quick question today is: What is your process for assessing a new oil?
Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.

I remember as a child going to the Rocky Mountains and a park ranger told us to smell the Douglas Fir. It was very beautiful and sweet. I don't remember it being like pine or cedarwood.. more sweet. I am eager to try. Maybe will carry it!?!
🌲 Emotional Support and Clarity
Douglas Fir essential oil is often used for clearing emotional clutter, helping with mental focus, and promoting a sense of renewal. It’s like deep forest therapy in a bottle. People often turn to it when they’re feeling mentally overwhelmed or emotionally stuck.
🌿 Chemical Profile Highlights
Its main constituents include bornyl acetate, alpha-pinene, and beta-pinene—these are known for their calming, anti-inflammatory, and respiratory-supportive properties.
- Bornyl acetate gives that soft, sweet, almost fruity-pine note—it’s also found in Helichrysum.
- Alpha-pinene is great for opening the airways and clearing the mind.
🧘♀️ Great for Diffusing
Because of its fresh, grounding aroma, Douglas Fir is excellent in a diffuser—especially blended with oils like bergamot, cedarwood, frankincense, or lavender for an emotionally grounding and inspiring blend.
🌬️ Respiratory Benefits
Like many conifer oils, it helps support healthy breathing and can be a great addition to steam inhalations or chest rubs (always diluted, of course!).
🌎 Eco Note
Douglas Fir essential oil is often sourced from sustainably harvested needles or branches—meaning it’s sometimes collected from byproducts of the lumber industry, which is a win-win for eco-conscious users.
Such a great question, Anthony! 🌿
Douglas Fir is such a beautiful and uplifting oil — we’d love to learn more about your work at Port Blakely.
Looking forward to hearing how others approach evaluating new oils too — always fascinating to see the care and craft behind every drop!
Such a beautifully refreshing conifer oil!
