About
One of the oldest and most common forms of natural insect repellent on Earth, citronella is effective as a remedy for arthritis, bacterial infections and headaches. In addition, citronella is highly useful as a deodorizer, purifier, and freshener and even for softening skin.
Origin and Composition
Most commonly found in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, citronella is a tall, hardy grass that is related to lemongrass. The essential oil is extracted using steam distillation. The oils’ aroma is described as pungent, musky and citrus-like, but with a more bitter element and less sweet than fruit-based oils.
Other
The oil can have a toning and tonic-like effect that is useful for treating a cold or flu. When using citronella, many people report feeling calmer, reduced stress and an increase in mental clarity. The essential oil is used widely in perfumes, soaps, skin lotions and deodorants.
Suggested Use
For aromatherapy use. Also as a room freshener, deodorizer, pet bath to ward off fleas, or in a mist or diluted topical solution as a method of repelling mosquitoes. Citronella essential oil is great when combined with bergamot, rose geranium, lemon, orange, lavender and pine.
