Most people love a citrus blend for about five minutes. Sweet orange sparkles, everyone smiles — and then it’s gone, thinned out to almost nothing before you’ve finished your tea. The fix isn’t more orange. It’s an anchor. Here is the small ritual blend I reach for on warm August evenings.

8 drops Sweet Orange — the bright, sunlit top note
5 drops Bergamot — the bridge: part citrus sparkle, part soft floral
2 drops Sandalwood — the slow, warm floor that holds it all down

Why it actually lasts. The molecule that makes orange smell like orange is limonene — a light monoterpene that is wonderfully volatile, which is a polite way of saying it flashes off in minutes. That’s why an all-citrus blend fades so fast. Sandalwood is the opposite: it’s rich in santalols, heavy, slow-evaporating molecules that perfumers have used for centuries as a natural fixative. The slow base note physically drags out the escape of the lighter ones, so the orange holds far longer than it ever could alone. Bergamot sits in the middle so there’s no gap between the sparkle up top and the warm floor below — three notes, one continuous arc.

Here’s the part most guides miss: limonene is fragile — heat and oxidation dull it and can turn it faintly sour. A warm-plate or ultrasonic unit works against your best citrus.
