5 Essential Oils For Allergy Relief

Allergy sufferers know that an allergy attack can be absolutely miserable.  You can spend days, even weeks, walking around in a fog, feeling like you have the flu.  So you want relief and fast.  One of the best ways to treat allergies is with essential oils.  They are safe, natural, and most importantly, incredibly effective at reducing the symptoms of an allergic response.

What Are Allergies?

Allergies are essentially a hypersensitivity to a foreign substance referred to as an allergen.  Allergens can be a variety of things from food to pollen to animal fur.  Allergens trigger an immune system response that can cause difficulty breathing, itchy watery eyes, hives, and in severe cases, swelling of the throat and lungs that can lead to anaphylaxis.

How Can Essential Oils Help Relieve Allergies?

Essential oils can help relieve allergies in four ways.  The first is they can reduce the pain associated with your immune system response.  The second they can help reduce inflammation which is the cause of most of the severe allergic responses.  The third is they can help bolster your immune system making your body less vulnerable to allergen triggers.  Finally, they can block the allergens from entering your home and your body.  So if you are looking for a great way to relieve your allergy symptoms, essential oils can help.

Here are the five best essential oils for allergy relief

  1. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint essential oil is an expectorant, a relaxant, and has antispasmodic properties.   So inhaling peppermint oil can help clear your sinuses, relieve the pain of a sore throat, and reduce coughing.  To treat your allergy symptoms, you can place a few drops of peppermint oil into an aromatherapy diffuser or dab a few drops on your forehead and chest.  Adding a drop of peppermint essential oil to a warm cup of tea can also help you relieve your allergy symptoms.

  1. Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is a great treatment for any respiratory ailments.  It is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant.  So it can help you clear your sinuses, reduce chest pressure and wheezing, and help detoxify your body of any allergens.  Eucalyptus essential oil can also soothe a sore throat and help reduce coughing.  To treat allergies, put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in an aromatherapy diffuser and breathe in the healing particles.  You can also put a few drops in a steaming bowl of water, place a towel over your head and the bowl, and breathe deeply for a few minutes.

  1. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory and also a natural antihistamine.  So it can strengthen your body against allergens and reduce many of the painful symptoms of your allergies.  Lavender oil can also help treat rashes and hives that can appear from skin allergies.  To treat your allergies with lavender oil, you can put a drop on your cheeks and around your sinuses throughout the day to relieve your symptoms.  You can also put a few drops in an aromatherapy diffuser and breathe in for 15 minutes.  You can also mix a few drops of lavender oil with coconut or jojoba oil and apply it directly to the skin area that has developed the rash or hives.

  1. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is one of the most powerful essential oils and can help kill allergy triggers in the home and directly treat skin allergies.  To treat allergies, put a few drops in an aromatherapy diffuser.  When diffused in the home, tea tree oil can reduce all kinds of allergens from mold to bacteria to fungi.  It also is an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, so it can be applied directly to areas with hives and rashes.  Though since it is so powerful, it is recommended that you mix it will a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba before direct application to the skin.

  1. Lemon Oil

Lemon oil supports both the lymphatic system and the immune system.  It can help detox your body and stimulate white blood cell production.  Lemon oil is best used around the home to eliminate allergy triggers in the air.  To treat allergies, you’ll want to mix a few drops of lemon oil and water to spray the air, any soft surfaces like upholstered furniture or drapes, and hard surfaces like counter tops and sinks.

These are just some of the essential oils that can help treat allergies.  If your allergies are very severe you should also check out basil, frankincense, chamomile, ginger, lemongrass, and cypress which can also help reduce and treat some of your worst allergy symptoms in a variety of ways.  Just make sure that if you are using essential oils to help with a medical condition like allergies that you are only using 100% pure, organic oils with no unnecessary additives like the high quality oils found at Organic Aromas.  So if you are suffering from allergies, check out our great selection of pure essential oils to ensure that you are getting the most therapeutic benefits.
