5 Reasons to Switch to a Plastic Free Essential Oil Diffuser
Essential oils, which are highly concentrated natural oils extracted from aromatic plants and herbs, have become a part of many households today. There are various ways to enjoy your essential oils. The simplest way is to inhale them straight from a personal bottle. However, if you want to make the most of your essential oils and share their benefits with your entire family, then diffusing will prove to be a great choice.
Essential oil diffusing is the method of releasing the oil to the air. A diffuser is an electric-powered device designed to spread the oil throughout the room or home. As a result, it gives the space a lovely and relaxing fragrance, while allowing the rest of the household enjoy the essential oil’s benefits.
When you decide to try diffusing your essential oils, you’ll find that there’s a lot of diffusers to choose from. They come in a wide range of types and styles. You can also choose between plastic and non-plastic diffusers.
Choosing the perfect diffuser for your home and needs can be quite a challenge, especially if you’ve just recently discovered the wonders of essential oils. The first step is to familiarize yourself with your options.
In this post, we’ll take a look at the reasons why you should consider plastic-free diffuser over a plastic one.
Why You Should Consider a Plastic-Free or Glass Diffuser Over a Plastic Diffuser
There are various reasons that make plastic-free diffusers, such as glass nebulizing diffusers, more superior compared to plastic diffusers. Essential oils are known to cause corrosion in plastic over time. As a result, harmful plastic particles may be released into the air while diffusing. It is also because of this that essential oils are stored in glass bottles, not plastic ones.
Plastic diffusers, particularly ultrasonic types, typically have a plastic chamber inside. This plastic chamber holds oil and water. Even though the water-based oils used in ultrasonic diffusers are diluted to about 0.20 percent, the oils still sit in plastic for a long time.
Furthermore, many plastic diffuser manufacturers advise against diffusing citrus oils in their products, or else you risk voiding the warranty. This is because they know exactly how corrosive essential oils can be to plastic.
For those who already have a diffuser that has plastic components, there’s no need to panic. You can still use it every once in a while, specifically when you want to add some moisture to indoor air. However, if you’re on the hunt for your first essential oil diffuser or want to eventually cut plastic out of your household, then opting for a plastic-free glass diffuser can prove to be a wise move.
Switch to a Plastic-Free Essential Oil Diffuser
There are at least five benefits to using a plastic-free diffuser. Here they are:
- It doesn’t dilute essential oils – Essential oils diffused using a plastic diffuser often smell different than how they smell from the bottle. This is because ultrasonic diffusers require diluting the essential oil in water. As a result, the smell is reduced, and so does its effects. When you use a glass nebulizing diffuser, you’ll get a smell close to the oil’s pure scent.
- It doesn’t produce a moldy smell – Some users notice that the scent produced by their ultrasonic diffuser sometimes have a moldy smell. Most likely, that moldy smell is indeed caused by mold. Because plastic ultrasonic diffusers require water to work, mold can accumulate inside the diffuser when the old water is not completely cleaned and dried. Furthermore, since ultrasonic diffusers release moisture to the air, it’s possible that it could make your house more humid than it should be. As a result, mold can develop inside your home. Glass diffusers keep oils pure, eliminating the risk of mold buildup.
- It allows the use of strong essential oils – As mentioned above, manufacturers of plastic-based diffusers remind customers not to use strong oils such as citrus oils in their products. If you love citrus essential oils and would love to finally be able to use them, a glass diffuser is the best way to go. Because they won’t corrode, glass nebulizing diffusers can diffuse strong oils without a problem.
- It is energy-efficient – Most glass nebulizing diffusers use very little electricity, making them even more environment-friendly. Remember, they do not release plastic particles in the air, so buying one is definitely an eco-friendly win-win!
- It looks good – Glass nebulizing diffusers come in a variety of designs, all of which make for lovely home ornaments. You can choose from a wide range of products with hand-blown glass reservoirs. These diffusers are almost like a sculpture. You can even get nebulizers that match seasons and occasions. For instance, Organic Aromas’ Christmas Tree Nebulizing Diffuser for Aromatherapy gives you a tiny Christmas tree-slash-diffuser in one!
When chosen carefully and used correctly, a glass nebulizing diffuser will help you get the most out of your essential oils and allow you to enjoy these five benefits.
We’ve learned the hard way plastic are JUNK! We went through 2 before we got fed up with the melting problem AND they rapidly started producing less and less vapor. Purchased a Lilypur ceramic. It’s a beautiful vase styled unit but doesn’t release nearly enough vapor. We don’t know what to buy that will run for hours and release enough meet our needs.
This would be a great product to use in my home.
Another great product for our world, way to much plastic in our water and on our lands. Thanks for the information and keeping is more informed.
Wonderful post with much information and facts I didn’t know. Thanks for sharing and happy holidays !
Thanks I will now consider using a plastic-free diffuser
Great information here, thanks for sharing.
The world is over flowing with plastic so we need to do away with plastic containers
Good to know. Didn’t think about mold on a diffuser with oil.
Great to know that they do’nt dilute oils, allows strong essential oils, energy efficient, no moldy smell, and ofcoarse looks great. Thanks you learn something everyday.
Had no idea and there are so many plastic ones on the market!
All these are super great reasons to switch to a plastic free essential oil diffuser!! But you forgot the most important one, it’s better for the planet! Plastic diffusers really do hurt the environment because they are not biodegradable! That is reason enough for me to switch! But being able to use stronger essential oils is also a great reason to switch!
We have enough toxins in our environment, we need to eliminate plastics whenever we can.
Como siempre, un buen reportaje con muy buenas ideas. Muchas gracias amigos.
If youu haven’t tried this, it really worths it. After trying a nebulazer all the other ways for aromatherapy will seem “fake”. Apart from its exquisite aesthetics and its non toxic materials, it is also consuming very little quantities of essential oil in relation to all other diffussers, enhancing at the same time their qualities
I didn’t know that the essential oils can break down the plastic diffusers.
I tried to eliminate as much plastic as I can from my life. I am so grateful to find these plastic free essential oil diffusers. Great for me and great for the planet
I have been thinking of buying a diffuser and before reading this article never thought about the dangers of using plastics. Thank you for this info.
thanks for the info
Most important to me is that glass is not corroded by essential oils while plastic may be and can release harmful plastic particles into the air.
All every excellent points. Plastic also has a higher environmental impact in its production and cannot actually be recycled. Only about 10% of plastic is downcycled, meaning that it cannot be recycled back to what it was but rather is melted down to form different products such as plastic chairs.
less plastic is a good idea
yes the less plastic in the world the better we will be
Very interesting, thanks for the info
I feel that using glass allows an uncontaminated scent to diffuse. But plastic is surely a lot better than aerosol sprays!
Harmful plastic particles may be released into the air while diffusing – not really sure about this, I own ultrasonic diffuser for 5 years already and no plastic has been dissolved from it, it looks like new, you just need to clean it from time to time. Even I am very satisfied with it, I decided to give a shot to a Radiance nebulizing diffuser, because of all other 4 reasons from this article. Can’t wait for it to arrive!
I love my Raindrop – Nebulizing Diffuser®
Very interesting. I’m hoping to get one of these real soon. (Santa, I’ve been a very good girl 😉)
I have a total of 4 nebulizing diffusers in my home from Organic Aromas, and I absolutely will never go back to plastic diffusers. There is NO comparison!
I only recently found out about the dangers of plastic in a support group for PCOS. I’m excited to take more control of my body and health by avoiding using plastics and it started today when I ordered my glass diffuser. Not to mention REAL potent aromatherapy… Can’t wait.
I love using a glass diffuser because I know that it’s not contaminated by plastic chemicals
