Essential Oils for Menopause Relief
While it may feel alien, it’s important to remember that menopause is a natural process for just about all women. Your period will likely grow irregular, you may lose sleep at night, and you may also feel waves of hot flashes coming on throughout any given day. This very natural process is not always a pleasant one, and supporting your body during this time of change is important. Essential oils can provide you with the additional support you need to help you to feel better, and knowing what essential oils to use to assist your body is important.
For those who haven’t experienced a menstrual cycle in the past 12 months, it’s a safe bet to assume you have entered menopause. Essential oils can be used during this menopause period, and they can be used during the perimenopause period that occurs before menopause actually begins. This natural decline in reproduction occurs when a woman reaches her 40’s and 50’s, when her ovaries no longer release the eggs that trigger menstruation to occur.
There are some conditions that can cause menopause to start early. These are premature ovarian failure and induced menopause. Premature ovarian failure occurs when the ovaries prematurely stop producing eggs, and your levels of estrogen and progesterone begin to change. This isn’t always permanent, and ovaries may begin producing eggs again in some instances. Induced menopause occurs when the ovaries are removed for medical reasons, or when medical interventions cause the ovaries to stop working. Radiation and chemotherapy have been known to cause induced menopause.
The Stages Of Menopause
Menopause not caused by medical induction or premature ovarian failure typically comes in 3 stages, perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Broken down, these stages consist of:
- Perimenopause – This begins a handful of years before menopause, and it’s caused by the ovaries beginning to slowly create less estrogen. Perimenopause will last up until menopause begins, and women may experience an increase in symptoms in the last couple of years of this stage as estrogen levels drop more quickly. It’s during this stage that the symptoms of menopause will be first felt.
- Menopause – Menopause officially begins 1 year from your last period, as the ovaries have stopped producing eggs and your estrogen levels have dropped significantly. During this time you may experience a wide variety of menopause symptoms.
- Post-menopause – Post-menopause consists of all the years after menopause. While the symptoms of menopause will have eased and will continue to ease, throughout the years, there are risks to be addressed due to the body’s lack of estrogen.
With essential oils, you can help to alleviate the symptoms associated with all stages of menopause, giving women some much-needed relief during this time of change.
What are the Symptoms of Menopause?
Each woman may experience different symptoms during different stages of menopause. Here is a list of symptoms that essential oils have been proven to help.
- Vertigo
- Hot flashes
- Insomnia
- Nervousness
- Melancholia
- Weakness
- Myalgia
- Headache
- Palpitations
- Paresthesia
Menopause can come with a wide variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms, and choosing the right essential oils can help to address them all. The best way to use essential oils for menopause benefits is with a nebulizing diffuser which will provide you with strong and effective dose of pure essential oils very quickly.
The Top Essential Oils to Diffuse for Help with Menopause Symptoms
- Lavender essential oil – Lavender essential oil is the quintessential soothing oil, whether it’s being applied topically to the skin or used in aromatherapy. For menopause, diffusing lavender essential oil can soothe feelings of anxiety, vertigo, insomnia, nervousness, and headache. In addition to calming the body, lavender essential oil may also help your body to regulate its hormones naturally.
- Clary sage essential oil – Help with hot flashes is something that most women yearn for during menopause, and clary sage essential oil can be just the help you’re looking for. Unlike lavender oil, which is best used in aromatherapy for menopause, clary sage oil is often most helpful when added to a carrier oil and applied to the skin of the back of the neck or the feet.
- Peppermint essential oil – Like clary sage essential oil, peppermint oil is a popular choice for hot flashes. Creating a water spritzer with jojoba oil, distilled water, and peppermint essential oil to be misted onto the face during hot flashes can do a great deal of good in cooling the body down.
- Geranium essential oil – Geranium essential oil can help to alleviate the skin dryness associated with menopause when applied topically, and it can help to reduce feelings of depression or melancholia when diffused. Whenever applying essential oils directly to the skin always dilute with 5% essential oils to 100% carrier oil.
Essential oils for menopause relief can be used alone, or combined with one another to create custom blends that address a wide variety of different concerns.
