Wednesday Mood: The October Dusk Arrival — Frankincense & Sweet Orange for the Nights That Start Early
Why Frankincense Takes Its Time (and Why That’s the Point)
At most Northern Hemisphere latitudes, early October is losing daylight at nearly 2–3 minutes a day — which means dusk has crept roughly 20 minutes earlier this week than it was two weeks ago. It’s a small, specific number, but it’s exactly why “the moment the lamps come on” feels so different right now than it did in September.
Frankincense resin is harvested slowly on purpose: a cut is made in the Boswellia tree’s bark, and the resin is left to “weep” and harden in the open air for weeks before it’s ever collected. That same unhurried behavior shows up again once it’s distilled into oil — frankincense is rich in heavier diterpene molecules like incensole acetate, which evaporate far more slowly than the light limonene molecules in a citrus top note. Burned as incense, heat forces that heavy resin to release all at once. Diffused with water or evaporation alone, it tends to lag behind and under-perform next to brighter oils.
A Nebulizing Diffuser® sidesteps that problem entirely: it atomizes the raw, undiluted oil mechanically with air pressure (the same Bernoulli’s-principle effect that lifts an airplane wing), rather than relying on heat or evaporation rate. Heavy resin molecules and light citrus molecules get carried into the room in roughly the ratio they exist in the bottle — the same reason resin oils like myrrh behave so differently depending on what’s doing the diffusing.
The Pairing: 4 Drops Sweet Orange, 2 Drops Frankincense
Cold-pressed sweet orange is almost entirely limonene — often 90% or more — which is exactly why it arrives fast and bright, like a light switching on. At a 2:1 ratio, it leads the moment you walk in, while frankincense’s two drops sit underneath, barely noticeable at first, building slowly into a warm, resinous hum that’s still there once the orange has thinned out and the room outside has gone fully dark.
- Place your Nebulizing Diffuser® somewhere you’ll walk directly into once dusk hits — the entryway, the kitchen, or wherever you land first.
- Add 4 drops sweet orange and 2 drops frankincense straight into the reservoir — pure and undiluted, no water or carrier oil.
- Start it on low about 30 minutes before dusk; the orange greets you right away, and the frankincense will still be quietly present long after the light outside is gone.
