What is the Best BPA-Free Essential Oil Diffuser?

If you’re interested in essential oils, you probably know a thing or two about the proper way to use and diffuse them. You might have also heard that plastic diffusers are not recommended. In fact, some enthusiasts are so against them that they’re labeled as “must-keep-away-from”.

If you just developed an interest in essential oils and their benefits, you might be wondering why plastic diffusers are not recommended. After all, they’re widely available and generally affordable, too.

Let’s start with the fact that everyone’s trying to be as environment-friendly these days. Patronizing plastic products, such as plastic essential oil diffusers, is a no-no if you want to support the plastic-free movement. You won’t even see your soft drinks served with plastic straws anymore.

Furthermore, a more valid reason not to use plastic diffusers is the fact that pure essential oils is highly corrosive to plastic. When you put essential oils in any plastic container, including a plastic-based diffuser, the properties of the essential oils are altered. As a result, their soothing and aromatic effects are reduced.

Pure essential oils can corrode and deteriorate the components of a plastic diffuser. Over time, the chemicals and compounds that are broken down from the plastic diffuser are released into the air. This means that using a plastic diffuser may expose you to dangerous chemical substances.

It is also typical for plastic products, such as plastic essential oil diffusers, to contain BPA. This chemical is one of the things that you never want to inhale.

What is BPA and Why You Should Worry About It?

BPA is short for bisphenol A. It is an industrial chemical that has long been used to manufacture various plastic and resin products since the 1960s. As such, BPA is typically found in epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics.

Epoxy resins are generally used for coating the inner parts of metal products, including bottle caps, food cans, and even water supply lines. Meanwhile, polycarbonate plastic is widely used in the production of containers used for the storage of food and beverage, as well as other consumer products. Older dental sealants are known to contain BPA, too.

Several studies show that BPA can transfer from the plastic container or metal coating to food and beverage. Because of this, concerns relating to the negative effects that BPA has on people’s health have been raised. BPA is linked to brain and prostate defects in fetuses and children. BPA is also thought to affect a child’s behavior and increase blood pressure. Such concerns triggered a rise in the demand for BPA-free plastics.

Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already stated before that BPA can be considered harmless at very low levels, it continues ongoing study and research. Even if BPA is yet to be directly linked to health concerns, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Here are the top ways to reduce exposure to BPA:

  • Use BPA-free products. Because of consumer concerns related to BPA exposure, manufacturers are compelled to produce BPA-free products. If you have no choice but use plastic products or containers, opt for those that have the label, “BPA-free”. You may also check for recycling codes and choose that have codes 3 to 7. Better yet, opt for non-plastic choices. For instance, choose glass essential oil diffusers over plastic ones.
  • Avoid heat, especially when using plastic. As much as possible, do not heat food, beverage or other items in plastic containers. Even if a plastic container is labeled microwavable, you’re better off not heating it up. When it comes to diffusing essential oils, it’s best to go for methods that won’t require heating the oils.
  • Reduce the purchase and use of canned products. If possible, refrain from purchasing canned foods, as the cans may be coated with BPA-containing resin.
  • Use alternative products. If possible, it’s best if you can drastically reduce your use of plastic and cans. In terms of essential oil usage, there’s a wide range of plastic-free essential oil diffusers you can use. These will not only keep you safe from potentially harmful plastic chemicals, but also help you make the most of your essential oils.

This are the best diffusers ever! When you buy one of these you never want to go back to a plastic one you have to use with water. Scent of the oils is so much better. Stronger, but you only have to diffuse for 10 or 15 minutes to have the benefits. I bought my second one already!
