Oil of the Day: Ho Wood — the Calm of Lavender in a Woodier Key

Imagine the hush of a cedar closet warmed by afternoon sun, softened until it turns almost floral — that first breath of Ho Wood is a woodland exhale you feel land somewhere behind your shoulders.

The same tree as camphor — a completely different oil. Ho Wood (Cinnamomum camphora ct. linalool) is steam-distilled from the wood of the camphor laurel — yes, the very tree that also gives us sharp, medicinal camphor oil. The difference is chemotype: grown in different soils and climates, one botanical can express wildly different chemistry. The camphor chemotype is bracing and cool; the linalool chemotype is creamy, soft, and faintly rosy.

Here’s the jewel. Ho Wood is one of nature’s richest sources of linalool — routinely 90–97%, far higher than lavender’s roughly 25–45%. That means it carries the very same signature calming molecule that makes lavender so soothing, but delivered in wood instead of herb. If you love what lavender does but not always how it smells, this is your oil. It’s also the ethical stand-in for endangered Brazilian rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora, now CITES-protected) — the same soft, powdery-floral wood note, without touching a threatened species.

The mood it suits. Ho Wood is quiet — warm, subtly sweet, gently rosy, with none of lavender’s herbaceous edge. It’s the oil for when you want calm without feeling sleepy: the soft landing after a long day, the aromatic equivalent of loosening your collar. Where I love it is the seam between work and evening — that awkward hour when your body is home but your head is still at the desk.

Why nebulizing matters here. Because Ho Wood is almost pure linalool — a delicate monoterpene alcohol — heat flattens its softest facets quickly. A Nebulizing Diffuser® disperses it cold, as pure undiluted micro-droplets, so the creamy top note survives intact instead of cooking off over a warm water tray. And because the oil is so concentrated, a very little goes a remarkably long way. (Chemotypes fascinate you? See our rosemary chemotype guide for how one plant becomes several oils.)

Today’s one-oil ritual. Add just 4–6 drops of Ho Wood alone to your Nebulizing Diffuser®, let it run for about 15 minutes as you shift from work into your evening, and breathe slowly on the exhale. No blend, no fuss — one oil, one breath, one gentle change of gear. Let the room soften around you.

If lavender has ever felt a touch too herbal for you, let Ho Wood be your softer doorway into calm. Breathe easy today.
