Wednesday Mood: The Latest Sunrise of the Year — Lime, Peppermint & Rose Geranium for the Dark-Kitchen Morning
Why This Week Has the Latest Sunrises of the Year
Most of us assume the darkest mornings belong to January. For a big stretch of the US, they arrive right now. On Saturday, October 31, the sun rises in New York at about 7:25. In early January, at the very bottom of winter, it rises around 7:20. Chicago, Denver and Detroit run the same pattern, with Detroit not seeing first light until after 8:00.
Here’s the little jewel. The sky isn’t the reason. The clock is. We’re still on daylight saving time until Sunday, November 1, so every late-October morning is borrowed an hour from the evening. The days have already shrunk most of the way toward the solstice, but the clocks haven’t caught up yet. The result is a short, strange window, these next few days, when your alarm rings in what is effectively the darkest morning of your whole year. On Sunday it flips and sunrise jumps back an hour overnight.
So for this one week, let scent do what the window can’t. A bright, green-edged aroma in the kitchen gives the room a “morning” signal while the glass is still saying night.
The Pairing: 5 Drops Lime, 2 Drops Peppermint, 1 Drop Rose Geranium
Lime is the light switch, zesty and sparkling, sharper and greener than lemon. Peppermint adds that cool-air feeling of stepping outside. One drop of Rose Geranium softens the edges with a faint rosy warmth, so the blend reads as a gentle sunrise rather than a cleaning cupboard.
- Add 5 drops Lime, 2 drops Peppermint and 1 drop Rose Geranium straight into the reservoir of your Nebulizing Diffuser®. Use them pure and undiluted, with no water or carrier oil.
- Run it on a low, intermittent setting for the 15 or 20 minutes it takes to make coffee and pack the bags.
- If yours is a Smart Nebulizing Diffuser®, set it in the app to start ten minutes before your alarm, so you walk into a room that is already awake.

A few more dark mornings, then the light comes back. Until then, let the kitchen smell like the sun is on its way.
Warmly,
