Why Use Essential Oils For a Better Workout?
However, for those who are serious about their workouts it’s always important to get the absolute most from them that they can. As such, finding the different tools that could help is something that many will try to do. Supplements, shakes, and other products are often considered but something that shouldn’t be overlooked is the use of essential oils.
How Can Essential Oils Help in the Gym
It surprises many to hear that essential oils could impact their workout experience, but it’s true. The key is understanding that there are many different ways that essential oils can be beneficial to athletes or those at home looking to get a better workout from their efforts.
For example, there are numerous reasons to consider utilizing essential oils. Some of the main reasons include:
Sanitize Your Equipment – They can help to clean and disinfect your gym equipment or ward off foul odors that are common when people sweat.
Increase Energy – They can help provide a boost of energy and increased focus to the body and mind.
Help you Unwind – Essential oils can also help relax you after the workout is finished, creating a calming finish to a deep workout.
Calm the Mind – Those same oils can promote better meditation and yoga experiences, helping calm the mind and bring clarity to your efforts.
Relieve Tension – Some oils can even help relieve aches and pains in sore muscles.
Which Essential Oils and How to Use Them?
Not all essential oils are created equally, and finding the right ones for your workout is important. To do so, you’ll need to know roughly what it is that you want to achieve and what you want the oils to do. From there, different oils will be worth adding to your workout routine. Here are some great options, what they’re good for, and how to use them to improve your workouts.
- Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus is a great essential oil for healing to calm sore, tired muscles. Mix 5 to 10 drops with one tablespoon of a carrier oil like coconut or sweet almond oil, and massage into sore muscles.
- Peppermint – Helps relieve the pain of sore muscles, peppermint oil can be combined eucalyptus oil and blended with the carrier oil to create an even more powerful massage oil that will help relieve pain. Also, peppermint’s aroma can help to enliven the mind and promote better breathing. You can rub a bit of this massage oil to the chest just before exercising to get this little boost.
- Lavender – Lavender is great for calming the body and mind after a long workout or during a yoga session. A great way to use it is simply to add 15 to 20 drops to a nebulizing diffuser and diffuse the oil after your workout. Alternatively, use a diffuser to fill the yoga or meditation room with a peaceful, calming aroma.
- Tea Tree – Tea tree oil can help to give a boost to your energy levels, and will help kill the bacteria that exercise equipment can harbor. Add 20 drops to an ounce of water and add to a spray bottle. Then, just use the spray to wipe down exercise gear. The tea tree essential oil kills bacteria, while the aroma helps give your mind a bit of a boost.
- Citronella – Citronella can help to increase heat levels in the body through thermogenesis. This in turn can help promote a better, more effective workout. Dilute 10 or so drops in a carrier oil and massage onto the skin before a workout to get these results.
It’s important to remember that these oils aren’t a magic bullet to better health. Just like other supplements, you can receive increased benefits when used properly to achieve certain goals. However, your performance still primarily comes down to you and your efforts. Put forth the right amount of time and energy into your workout, and pair it with a healthy nutritional plan, and workout results will be there for you. The right essential oils can certainly help, though, and can be excellent companions for those trips to the gym.
