Natural Ways to Reduce Fever
Whether it is you or your child, you never want to pull the thermometer from the mouth and see a high reading. Although fevers are your body’s way of helping fight whatever infection you may have and will help you recover faster, it can be despairing, and you may look for other ways to find relief.
Traditional medicine may give you side effects that leave you feeling dizzy or sleepy and often contain ingredients you are unsure of. It’s good to know there are other natural and viable ways you can try to help to reduce fever without worrying about any adverse reactions to traditional medication.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a staple in most pantries and has been used for decades as a natural way to treat a variety of different ailments, including fevers. To help with a fever, prepare a bowl of water with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, use a washcloth and place it on you or your child’s forehead or even stomach area. You can also add half a cup of this mixture to a nice warm bath if you prefer.
Warm Bath
Many people think taking a cold bath will help reduce fever by bringing down your body temperature. This is false. Getting into a cold bath when you have a fever can actually shock your body and may cause the fever to rise even higher. Therefore, a warm bath is always recommended.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are great to have handy in your arsenal and having them around for a fever is no exception. Essential oils are a good way to help reduce a fever and begin to moderate body temperature. Peppermint, ginger, and cinnamon are often used for fevers due to the properties they possess to help with the circulatory system. They can cause you to sweat which will help better disperse your body heat.
Herbs
Several herbs can be a help play a role in reducing a fever. Elderberry can strengthen your immune system. While Echinacea and lemon balm are popular go-to’s for fever, and can also help fight off infection.
Watch Your Diet
When you have a fever, food is probably one of the furthest things from your mind, so this probably goes without saying. When you have a fever, it is important to eat lightly and if you really don’t have an appetite, then don’t force yourself to eat. You want your body to focus on combatting the infection you have, rather than focusing on digesting a large meal.
In addition to all these natural ways available to help reduce a fever, you will also want to make sure that you drink plenty of liquids such as water and tea so that you can stay hydrated.

I make a Witches’ Brew around this time of year. Perfect for colds. I add some crushed garlic, ginger, fresh lemon, and spices (mainly for taste – I like a bit of heat from chilli in there) and add to a jar of honey about 3/4 full. Leave out to ferment and when it’s been bubbling a couple of days, I pop it in the fridge until I start to feel a bit ill. It’s a great source of vitamin C and cold battling goodies. A spoonful in a mug of warm water each morning is good for avoiding colds too.

I love avocados and my favourite way to reduce fever naturally is with tea and honey.

I have an apple cider vinegar drink almost every morning. I had no idea it could be used topically as well.
A fever, though uncomfortable, is actually healing. It is your body’s way of fighting off what ails you. A high fever though should be watched and lowered. These are all good ideas. Thank you for sharing.
My grandmother worked with all natural med. My mother is 95 and used them on our family. To reduce a fever we use a cloth dipped in water and alcohol and bath the body with it.
Warm Bath with salts and aromatherapy is one of the bests.

Very interesting info. Thanks for the article. When I start to have a fever, I use oregano essential oil and I put 2 drops in an empty capsule and I swallow the capsule with a warm thyme infusion. It really works!

I have been looking into more natural ways to treat colds and fevers. I would have assumed cold water was the correct treatment.That being said I usually began with warm then slowly added cooler water but never cold. So my instincts were correct. As a teen I woke up sick with a sore throat and within a minute went into violent convulsions. My temp was 108! In the midst of heavy snow & bitter cold my fever came down to a survivable 106 during the drive to emerg. Tonsillitis was the culprit, I am pretty sure cold water could have been fatal in that case.
