DIY Mouthwash Recipe With Essential Oils
If you are keen on good oral health, you probably know what mouthwash is and the benefits therein. Mouthwash is a product used to rinse the mouth – usually after brushing. It carries many oral health benefits; the most prominent one being – killing germs. To have and sustain a white healthy smile, you have to go beyond brushing your teeth everyday. Using a high quality mouthwash and flossing are excellent additions to your oral care regimen. Before looking at the best mouthwash to use, below is a quick look at the top merits of using a mouthwash for oral care.
Reasons to Use Mouthwash
Fresh Breath
Having fresh breath is one indicator of good oral health. However, brushing alone does not guarantee fresh breath. This is because bacteria that cause bad breath cannot be fully destroyed by toothpaste. Also, many people do not brush teeth properly, leaving a loophole for bacteria growth in the mouth. Mouthwash has power to get rid of bacteria and leave your mouth smelling fresh. There is nothing more off putting than bad breath and to this end, this is a top benefit of using mouthwash.
Prevent Cavities and Plaque
Cavities form when you do not maintain good oral hygiene. Also, they can form owing to weak teeth among other reasons. Plaque forms along gums or between teeth and this is mainly due to poor oral practices. Mouthwash contains the right properties to prevent both plaque and cavities. This essentially maintains your teeth in a healthy manner. This is the best way to avoid tooth decay. Decayed teeth lead to tooth loss and this can be very costly to remedy.
Unlock Stuck Particles
Using a mouthwash can help unlock particles that are stuck between teeth. This improves the quality of brushing as well. Try using some mouthwash before brushing and you will notice that many food particles will dislodge. Bear in mind that small food particles left after brushing and flossing can cause oral health problems. Mouthwash can also help cure canker sores that form in the mouth. It does this by killing bacteria and soothing the sores.
Which Mouthwash Should You Use?
There are all kinds of mouthwash brands in the market. Many of these products have ingredients that can be harmful to your health. Mouthwash should also be used as a rinse and should never be swallowed. Having said this, anything exposed to your body or skin can be absorbed in your body. Mouthwash bought from a store can have harmful active ingredients like methyl salicylate. This chemical can cause organ toxicity if not used properly. Commercial mouthwashes should therefore be taken with utmost caution. Thankfully, you have the alternative of using natural and safer mouthwash.
DIY Mouthwash for Better Oral Care
Making your own mouthwash at home using safe natural ingredients is certainly the way to go. Essential oils can help you achieve a mouthwash that is both effective and safe. Remember, essential oils are potent liquids that come with antimicrobial properties among other benefits. Oils like tea tree are known to kill bacteria and prevent gingivitis. These oils also tackle inflammation and help you heal any oral problem you may have. It is worth nothing that some essential oils also help whiten your teeth naturally. A good example is lemon essential oil which adds the needed sparkle to your pearls. Many oils come with pleasant aromas that enhance your breath in addition to freshening you. Below is an excellent DIY mouthwash recipe using essential oils;
Things You Need
Firstly, this recipe will definitely save you money. All the ingredients like oils are easy to find and are affordable.
Essentials Oils Needed
Spearmint oil – 4 drops
Lemon oil – 4 drops
Tea tree oil – 6 drops
Peppermint oil – 6 drops
You Also Need:
One tablespoon calcium carbonate powder
Concentrated trace mineral liquid – 9 drops
Spring water – 3 cups
To improve the taste of your mouthwash, you can choose to add some pure liquid stevia – this is however optional to suit your taste buds. Stevia adds a subtle sweetness to your mouthwash.
How to Make
First, add the trace minerals, calcium carbonate powder and spring water in a mason jar. You can also use a plastic bottle that is BHA-free. Use a spoon to mix these ingredients properly. The main reason to use spring water instead of tap water is to steer clear of bacteria that may come from tap water. Because you are not using any preservative in your mouthwash, this is important. Calcium promotes stronger teeth while trace minerals help repair damaged cells.
The next step is to add all the essential oils. Spearmint and peppermint oils promote fresh breath and have antimicrobial properties. Cover the mix with a lid and shake properly.
Your mouthwash is ready!
How to Use
Never swallow any kind of mouthwash. Just take a small sip and swish in your mouth for about 30 seconds; make sure to gargle as well before spitting. Your DIY mouthwash using essential oil can be safely stored in the fridge or in a dark place. This recipe can be used roughly 40 times before it runs out.
Conclusion
There are many DIY recipes when using essential oils. For example, you can use aloe vera in your mouthwash to add a host of benefits. Studies have shown that aloe vera can treat gum conditions like gingivitis among others. It works by promoting healing and treating inflammation while providing an antiseptic effect. You can also add an essential oil of choice to your mouthwash to achieve a desired aroma for great breath. Don’t forget to use essential oils properly as prescribed. This cost effective approach to mouthwash is sure to give you sparkling results that you can be proud of.
